Yes, you read that right. I have been a Flight Attendant for 7 years and for the first time in my Flight Attendant life I forgot my passport when I was flying an international trip. I show you all of the good, the bad and the ugly in this video. A Flight Attendant job can be stressful and full of chaos. Luckily I am more organized than I was on this day when we took the private jet to Panama.

Getting Hip in Portland

I can always tell when I am working the Portland flight, hello hipsters! There is never a lack of ukeleles, fedoras or mustaches. Before last week I had 2 overnights there but they were only 8-9 hours on the ground which meant showering, sleeping and wishing I had more time. I scored a little more time there on my last layover, 13 hours, and while I typically never explore if my ground time is less than 15 or so hours I rented a bike, fixed gear of course- I had to fit in, and took a nice ride with my fellow stews along a river path toward Mt. Hood.

The trail was along the water for the majority of the way. Mt. Hood is in the background. It was hot as hell but it didn't burn off the cloud coverage so I couldn't get a decent picture.

Keeping with the hipster theme we stopped for coffee on the ride back to the hotel. If I was really on point I would have taken a picture of my coffee and Instagrammed it. Next time!

A few hours after our bike ride it was adios Portland and I had a totally different view of Mt. Hood.

Portland overnights are hard to come by because the city is so amazing. Hopefully I get more time there so I can make my way downtown and see what else it has to offer.

SLC Came Calling Last Time I Came to Blog

A couple posts ago I was writing about the joy of not being called out on my scheduled on call day. I did my quick proof read, hit post and shut down my computer. Feeling satisfied with myself I went into the kitchen for a snack when bam, my phone rings, its crew scheduling, they have a flight for me to work.

My five seconds of being annoyed vanished pretty quickly. I was given 7 hours notice and I was flying with a guy who was in my Flight Attendant training class. We also had an 18 hour Salt Lake City layover so I was excited I had plenty of time to eat, sleep and explore.

Salt Lake City here we come! This Olympic flag was posted in the city and county building.

After a very turbulent flight our crew was driven to the hotel. We agreed to change and meet in the hotel bar in fifteen minutes. It is nearly impossible to get your drink on in Utah. I am almost certain the beer was 3.2%. I had to finish the entire beer before I could order another one, no savoring those last two sips until another cold one is brought out. Luke went with a mixed drink and the only thing you could taste was the mixer. You couldn’t order a double of anything either. Ok- so we could still have a fun sober layover. Moving on…

0930 was the time we agreed to meet the next morning to explore. Luke knocked on my door and we were off to make memories. The most important thing on the days agenda was getting a strong cup of coffee.

RawBean was within walking distance and made a great cup of coffee. They also have free biscotti and the flavor changes daily.

My only must see  was the Mormon Temple. Other than that our plan was to wander and see what SLC had to offer.

The light rail. Downtown was close enough for us to walk to, and I really needed the exercise and fresh air so we stayed on foot the entire time.

We were feeling a little ballsy so we decided to go into the building and see if we could make it up to the bell tower.

Once we discovered you could only climb the tower in the summer, and had to access the stairs from the basement we were a little let down. That didn't stop our sense of adventure however. I looked left and saw the Mayor's Office. "Wanna meet the Mayor" I asked Luke, "Let's do this."

It fucking worked! My crazy ideas always pan out somehow and give me material for stories. Mayor Ralph Becker was a very down to earth, well spoken man. We even got a little tour, a pin and an official pen.

This is the view out of the Mayor's window. That is the University of Utah way back there.

Once my Jackie O. moment was over we were back to pounding the pavement. This is temple square.

I knew we were getting close to the LDS Temple if we made it to Temple Square. I slightly remembered what the outside looked like from the brief research I did before my flight. I grabbed Luke’s arm with excitement and said “oh look there it is,” so we made our way up the stairs and walked in…to a FUNERAL! Wrong building, wrong religion. I felt terrible and we got out of that building as quietly as we could. Yeah this makes for a good story, but I saw the picture of the man who passed and thats really what I remember from entering Mystery Church.

See that beautiful building in the distance. That's what I was looking for.

I'm a little annoyed with myself that I didn't bring Mr. Clown. I missed out on my pic opportunity, but this was the second time I've flown to SLC in a month so I will have to find a fun spot for him next time.

It was nearing noon and we had a 1300 crew van to take us to the airport so we had to walk our way back. Thats a Joseph Smith statue. I think he is the guy who invented the Mormon religion.

My overall impression of Salt Lake is a great one. The city is clean. The restaurant selection is good and there is a lot to do to keep you busy. I am hoping I have a longer layover here soon so I can ski. That would be the ultimate Salt Lake experience.
